20-Proactive Awareness

Proactive awareness in a synchronous universe means far more than just awareness of our reactive behavior and its consequence. Ultimately, it means that when we look at a close associate, a friend, or family member, we must ask ourselves why we are linked to that unique version of that particular person. Our associations with others are not as casual, coincidental or as meaningless as the Newtonian view of a mechanistic universe would lead us to believe.

Proactive awareness in a synchronous universe means that, in each moment of our lives, we could, if we had sufficient self-understanding, start from scratch and choose a next moment with no connection whatsoever to the one that preceded it. We could start clean and move off into an entirely new direction in life.

Proactive awareness in a synchronous universe means knowing our environment to resemble a dream far more than the objectively physical reality we have always assumed it to be. Everything in a dream belongs to our own psyche, although we don't recognize it as such. The same holds true with waking reality and for the same reason.

An understanding of synchronicity is not a casual observation with no direct impact upon our lives, nor it a phenomenon to toy with for its entertainment value. Synchronicity is the manifestation of the meaning and significance and familiarity of our lives. It is the structure of the self observed by the self, like a reflection in a mirror, although this image we do not so easily identify as ourselves. We express that meaning and structure as the people, places, and things in our lives, and we paint their image upon the landscape of our awareness with conscious qualia, the color and sound, taste, aroma and sensation of reality.

We are not unaware of these elements of our existence, but we are not always consciously familiar with what we are experiencing. Like a dog staring at a television screen, the image is apparent, but the information it contains and how it came to be cannot be incorporated into a dog's level of understanding.

The constant pressure of evolution will see to it that we grow into new understandings and new environments. Humans and dogs alike evolve in both body and mind. As an example of how this works, when we point to an object, a domesticated dog will look to the object to which we are pointing. A wolf will not. Domesticated dogs live in a qualitatively different world by virtue of their interaction with human beings. 'Pointing' means nothing to a wolf within its native environment.

Isaac Newton's universe is the universe of the sensorium, but a what-you-see-is-what-you-get reality is an intellectual dead-end. The only clue that something may lie 'beyond' is the age-old observation that a human being can be walking, talking, thinking, and feeling one moment and torn meat guzzled by predators in the next. The key question is: How are we contained in a piece of meat? There must be two things, meat and consciousness, but, as with our experiment with the apple and the spoon, what confusion is wrought when we can't keep the real apple on the left hand side of the spoon knowing it has already been 'through the wire' of the nervous system and can only be a conscious representation?

Unless, perhaps, we had direct access to reality all along, and we misunderstood how it worked. The clues have always lurked in plain sight. Until recently, we hadn't the resources to either 'see' or recognize what they implied.

There is a view beyond Isaac Newton's universe, but it can't be seen with the eyes at all. It can only be witnessed by the intellect as an interference pattern behind double slits and the technology we've derived from quantum superposition. The sensorium tells no lies, but it shows only patterns in terms of time and space, which is the framework of an observer, that which we are.

Everything we are exists in the immanent Now. There is no past ‘back there’ behind us, and no future ‘out there’ before us. When we experience an event, that actual event, that collection of quantum states which constitute the event and not just memory of it, are added to our total being. It becomes a part of our space-time environment, which seems to be something separate from our selves, but is not. We share that environment with others, but those liaisons are fluid, and our allegiance to our values in life determine those liaisons. Our waking consciousness surfs the boundary between Platonia and space-time to give birth to our sensorium, and our complementary dreaming consciousness broadens its focus and reaches far and wide in search of new territory and new personal potential to explore.

We cannot imagine the entirety of our being as it stands. If we say life has lived upon our world for four billion years, so have we, in terms of time, and a great deal went on before. The world around us, our world, seems to overwhelmingly dwarf the sharp focus of the immanent Now, but it contains the remains of the bodies of every creature we have even been and the physical modifications that every one of those creatures have wrought upon the face of our planet. We share most of our history with others, but either we were those others at one 'time', or they were entangled contemporaries, which amounts to the same thing within our larger definition of identity despite the fact that no other conscious reality, even those closest to us, has an identical history or lives in an identical 'objective physical reality'.

This is why the notion of an 'objective physical reality' is so attractive. It is far simpler, far more suited for our limited intellect and imagination, and far less of a personal challenge. Trouble is, we can whip out our apple and the spoon and defeat it. We are snapped back to the mind-body problem, and if have fully understood how deceiving and contradictory simple appearances can be, we won't walk that path again.

Proactive awareness is an awareness of what can and cannot be and precludes old assumptions that are seldom questioned, but must be questioned and reasoned for the fallacies they contain. The ideas of objective physical reality is a self-contained model of reality that only falls apart beyond its fuzzy edges of double slit experiments and tunnel diodes. It's only harmful when it imprisons the human 'soul' and marches it down a path of oblivion. Proactive awareness of the synchronous structure of our lives enables us to manage our affairs toward the goal of a life of broader horizons than the eye can see, or the imagination can envision.

The synchronous structure to our lives is in itself static, a reflection of its acausal nature, although not at all unchangeable. It is invariably a reactive structure when we are not aware of its presence. Knowing of it's role in our lives enables us to perceive with increasing clarity the deeper meaning of our histories, individual and collective. Once we learn to see beyond cycling biological horizons, the meaning and opportunity and value of our lives will intensify by one profound quantum leap.
